What Does the Commission on
Congregational Development Do?
By John Morris
The vision of the Commission on
Congregational Development is of a diocese of
healthy congregations supported by healthy clergy.
Most of the parishes of our
diocesan family are living into this vision. There
are some that are in need of special attention
while all of our parishes are called to do more.
Opportunities for mission abound. God has blessed
us with a bounty of resources. To match our gifts
with our needs is the challenge that lies before
Our Bishop and diocesan staff by
their dedication and creativity are leading us
forward in this direction. With the aid of the
recent Diocesan Effectiveness Review the strengths
and weaknesses of our diocesan mission are being
more clearly defined and addressed. The role of
the Commission on Congregational Development is to
give our congregations what they require to carry
out Christ’s mission by coordinating the talents
of our diocesan ministries. Read more here.

Operation Understanding Grants
Operation Understanding has been
providing grants to churches that house or are
deeply involved in outreach ministries since
1968. Bishop Dean Stevenson created
Operation Understanding in order to help
disenfranchised people within our diocese.
We have two grant cycles each year, and the
deadline date for the Fall cycle is October 31,
2012. Fall grants provide partial funding
for ministries that provide food, shelter,
clothing, and energy assistance. Grants for
educational programs for needy children are
reserved for the Spring cycle. Information
and online submission forms are on the diocesan website.
Please click on all 4 links at the bottom of the
Operation Understanding webpage. If you need
assistance in writing your grant application or
budget, please contact Nancy Forgang at
In 2013, the church with the most
creative new outreach ministry will be recognized
at the diocesan convention. We look forward
to hearing from you.
